Tesori conosciuti ed altri più nascosti, a mostrare una bellezza austera e senza tempo, unica in Piemonte e sul territorio nazionale. Città dai mille volti e dai tanti interventi di recupero, ampiamente documentati nel volume recentemente pubblicato da L’Artistica Savigliano.

Un millennio di storia, arte e cultura curato da Rosalba Belmondo, direttrice per trent’anni del Museo Civico di Savigliano, apre porte, stanze, panorami e l’anima stessa della città, consentendo al lettore di visitare chiese, piazze e palazzi di rara bellezza. Savigliano. Un millennio di storia, arte e cultura ci ha dato modo di approfondire i contenuti di un’opera dal sapore monumentale con l’editore Giacomo Lorenzato, per una piacevole chiacchierata alla scoperta dei progetti futuri.
Quanto è durata la ricerca del materiale da includere?
L’idea di questo libro nasce dalla storia de L’Artistica: i libri d’arte e fotografici sono sempre stati quelli che ci hanno appassionato di più e che ci identificano tra i nostri lettori. L’Artistica ha sempre posto tra i punti salienti della propria linea editoriale la valorizzazione del patrimonio artistico e culturale del territorio, tanto che le nostre primissime pubblicazioni di cinquant’anni fa erano dedicate proprio a Savigliano. Da allora la città è molto cambiata, grazie alla sensibilità di amministrazioni, enti e privati: numerosi edifici e spazi sono stati ristrutturati ai loro antichi splendori, ma non sempre tutto questo è noto ai cittadini e ancora meno ai turisti. Ci auguriamo che questo libro permetta di (ri)scoprire Savigliano, una città d’arte con un patrimonio artistico di grande valore. Ed è per questo che sono stati necessari oltre tre anni per la pubblicazione: più studiavamo a fondo la città, più scoprivamo noi stessi materiale imprescindibile per arricchire l’opera. Nelle ricerche è stata molto preziosa la curatrice, Rosalba Belmondo, direttrice per moli anni del Museo Civico di Savigliano, che ha curato tutti i capitoli introduttivi e le didascalie delle oltre 600 immagini.
Il volume tocca tutti gli aspetti artistici della cittadina. Ci sono scoperte di cui andate particolarmente fieri?
Questo libro ha una peculiarità rispetto ad ogni altra opera su Savigliano: permette di entrare per la prima volta in decine di edifici privati che mai avevano aperto le proprie porte. Tutto questo non limitandosi ai palazzi del centro storico ma spaziando anche alle ville e dimore situate nelle frazioni e fuori città. Analogamente, abbiamo esaminato ogni chiesa e cappella del territorio: per gli edifici più noti ci auguriamo che le immagini la curiosità di osservare i particolari grazie ai numerosi ingrandimenti di dettagli; per altri che siano un’occasione di scoperta anche per i cittadini. Basti pensare al meraviglioso ciclo di affreschi della Cappella di San Giuliano che, nonostante numerosi interventi effettuati in anni recenti, meriterebbe ben maggiori attenzioni.
Che percorso consigliate ad un turista che abbia letto il vostro volume e voglia trascorrere qualche tempo a Savigliano, all’insegna dell’arte?
Di partire dai due edifici simbolo della città: palazzo Taffini, con il suo meraviglioso Salone d’onore e i suoi interni, poi il palazzo Muratori Cravetta, con le sue architetture affascinanti, spesso sede di mostre. D’obbligo poi la vista almeno delle principali chiese parrocchiali, San Pietro, Sant’Andrea e Santa Maria della Pieve dove è possibile ammirare le opere dei grandi artisti della scuola saviglianese, Molineri e Claret su tutti. Infine, ma non certo per ordine di importanza, la visita al Museo Civico Antonio Olmo e Gipsoteca Davide Calandra, in cui ammirare altre opere degli artisti saviglianesi e non solo, oltre alla Gispsoteca di rilevanza nazionale, conservando i gessi del noto scultore. E’ poi importante perdersi nei vicoli del centro storico o semplicemente passeggiare nella piazza Santa Rosa, per ammirare l’eleganza e i particolari degli edifici che si affacciano. Se si vuole approfondire ciò che ha reso famosa Savigliano in Italia e ne mondo, merita una vista il Museo Ferroviario Piemontese, che conserve treni di tutte le epoche, molto consigliabile anche per le famiglie e i bambini.
Dopo aver portato a termine un’opera dal sapore monumentale come questa, quali sfide attendono L’Artistica Savigliano?
Intanto ci auguriamo che quest’opera sia un modello per progetti analoghi in altre città. Simili pubblicazioni sono certamente impegnative nella realizzazione, ma crediamo siano uno strumento fondamentale per valorizzare l’immagine di una città attraverso il suo il patrimonio storico e artistico. Quest’anno abbiamo pubblicato un’altra edizione molto importante: Le miniature di un Libro d’Ore, la riproduzione in tiratura limitata di un prezioso codice miniato quattrocentesco conservato all’Archivio di Stato di Torino. Sia quest’opera che Savigliano. Un millennio di storia, arte e cultura, pur nelle differenze, sono stati progetti molto impegnativi, di quelli che un piccolo editore realizza ogni cinque o dieci anni. Noi li abbiamo pubblicati entrambi quest’anno: ora la sfida è far conoscere nel migliore dei modi ai lettori l’importanza culturale e la bellezza delle loro pagine.

Savigliano. Un millennio di storia, arte e cultura (Savigliano. A millennium of art, history and culture) gave us the opportunity to discuss the contents of this monumental work with the publisher: Giacomo Lorenzato, for a pleasant chat to discover future projects.
How long did the search for material to include take?
The idea for this book stems from the history of L’Artistica: art and photographic books have always been the ones we are most passionate about and which identify us with our readers. L’Artistica has always placed the enhancement of the artistic and cultural heritage of the area among the salient points of its editorial line, so much so that our very first publications fifty years ago were dedicated precisely to Savigliano. Since then the town has changed a great deal, thanks to the sensitivity of administrations, bodies and private individuals: numerous buildings and spaces have been restored to their former glory, but not all of this is always known to the citizens and even less so to tourists. We hope that this book will allow people to (re)discover Savigliano, a city of art with an artistic heritage of great value. This is why it took more than three years to publish: the more we studied the town in depth, the more we discovered essential material to enrich the work. The editor, Rosalba Belmondo, director of the Savigliano Civic Museum for many years, was invaluable in her research. She wrote all the introductory chapters and captions for the over 600 images.
The volume touches on all the artistic aspects of the town. Are there any discoveries of which you are particularly proud?
This book has a special feature compared to any other work on Savigliano: it allows us to enter for the first time dozens of private buildings that had never opened their doors. This is not limited to the buildings in the historic centre, but also covers the villas and residences in the hamlets and outside the town. Similarly, we have examined every church and chapel in the area: for the best-known buildings, we hope that the images will inspire the curiosity to observe the details thanks to the numerous enlargements; for others, they will also be an opportunity for citizens to discover them. Just think of the marvellous cycle of frescoes in the Chapel of San Giuliano which, despite numerous interventions in recent years, deserves much more attention.
What route would you recommend to a tourist who has read your book and wants to spend some time in Savigliano, for an artistic journey?
They should start with the town’s two symbolic buildings: Palazzo Taffini, with its marvellous Hall of Honour and its interiors, then palazzo Muratori Cravetta, with its fascinating architecture, often the venue for exhibitions. Then a visit to at least the main parish churches, San Pietro, Sant’Andrea and Santa Maria della Pieve, where you can admire the works of the great artists of the Savigliano school, Molineri and Claret above all, is a must. Last but certainly not least, a visit to the Museo Civico Antonio Olmo and Gipsoteca Davide Calandra, where you can admire other works by Savigliano artists and others, as well as the nationally important sculpture museum, which houses the plaster casts of the well-known sculptor. It is also important to get lost in the alleys of the old town centre or simply stroll through Piazza Santa Rosa, to admire the elegance and details of the buildings that overlook it. If you want to learn more about what has made Savigliano famous in Italy and the world, it is worth visiting the Piedmontese Railway Museum, which houses trains from all eras, also highly recommended for families and children.
After completing such a monumental work, what challenges await L’Artistica Savigliano?
First of all, we hope that this work will be a model for similar projects in other towns. Such publications are certainly difficult to produce, but we believe they are a fundamental tool for enhancing the image of a city through its historical and artistic heritage. This year we published another very important edition: Le miniature di un Libro d’Ore, the limited edition reproduction of a precious 15th-century illuminated codex preserved in the Turin State Archives. Both this work and Savigliano. Un millennio di storia, arte e cultura, despite their differences, were very challenging projects, the kind that a small publisher would produce every five or ten years. We have published both this year: now the challenge is to make the cultural importance and beauty of their pages known to readers in the best possible way.
