Vincent van Gogh incontra Emile Bernard nel ‘fatidico’ 1886 nello studio di Fernand Cormon di cui furono entrambi allievi. Bernard lo considera un vero e proprio mentore, per via dei 15 anni di età. Tuttavia, entrambi hanno un forte ascendente sull’arte dell’altro, utilizzando la semplificazione del tratto fino allo strenuo. Alla morte di Vincent, Bernand ne divenne biografo, nonché unico artista a lasciare una testimonianza visiva di quelli che furono i suoi funerali.
Vincent van Gogh met Emile Bernard in the ‘fateful’ 1886 in the studio of Fernand Cormon, whose pupils they were both. Bernard considered him a mentor, due to his 15 years of age. However, both had a strong influence on the other’s art, using simplification of line to the point of strenuousness. When Vincent died, Bernand became his biographer and the only artist to leave a visual record of his funeral.
